Most chains sold today are made by machines. A machine draws the wire, bends it into links and welds each link closed, in one automated cycle. That is why a thin, machine-made chain can cost so little. So why does ByEnzo Jewelry hand-build every platinum chain we sell, link by link? The short answer is that above roughly 4 mm, platinum simply won't let a machine do the job.
Platinum is soft and stiff at the same time
Platinum has an unusual combination of properties. It is ductile — it stretches and yields rather than cracking — and yet it is stiff and dense, so bending it takes real force. In our workshop that shows up at the bench every day. The basic tools for working metal are the saw and the file — both cut by friction. Platinum's ductility, which our artisans simply call "sticky", makes the metal pack itself between the saw teeth and into the grooves of the file, and it does not come out on its own. It has to be brushed out with a wire brush, again and again, and that constant clearing wears the tools far faster than other metals do. Polishing is the same story in reverse: the surface is soft yet the metal underneath is hard, so bringing up the final shine takes special tools and two to three times as long as other metals.

A chain-making machine has to grip the wire, bend it around a former, and weld the joint, all in one automated cycle. For platinum wire up to about 4 mm link width, a machine can meet those mechanical demands. Beyond that, the force needed to grip and bend rises steeply with thickness, the welded joint becomes harder to make cleanly, and the reject rate climbs until machine production simply is not worth attempting. And as far as we know, the factories that build chain-making machines do not make platinum chain machines for widths above 4 mm at all.
What the machine leaves behind
Even below 4 mm, "machine-made" is not the whole story. To run reliably, machines generally use alloys formulated for machine production rather than the alloys used in fine jewelry, and in practice most machine chain is 3 mm or under; some link styles can be machined up to 4 mm. A machine also leaves its marks: where the jaws gripped the wire and where the link was bent, the metal carries small witness marks. Removing them means an artisan finishing each link by hand — at which point the cost is the same as making the chain by hand in the first place. So machine chain is usually sold without that final finishing.
How we build a chain
At ByEnzo Jewelry every link is made on its own, then assembled into the chain — the same process we use to make a ring, repeated for every link. To give a sense of scale: a 52 cm Cuban chain at 7 mm has 78 links. An artisan with thirty years at the bench cuts and files about 25 to 30 of them in a day, not counting melting and preparing the metal. Assembling the chain takes about three days, and polishing it another day and a half. It is slow, but it keeps the color and character of PT950 exactly as the metal is, with no tool marks to hide and no compromise alloy. Before machines existed, all chain was made this way.
What you can actually see and feel
We will not tell you a handmade chain is heavier — at the same width and length the weight is essentially the same. What people notice first about platinum itself is the heft: because of its high density, a platinum chain feels substantial the moment you pick it up. The second thing they notice is what happens when they put it on. Platinum is one of the most skin-friendly of all jewelry metals — hypoallergenic, and with no sense of a foreign object against the body — so a chain of the right weight sits on the skin with a pleasant, even pressure rather than a nag.

The handwork is what you see and feel on top of that. The finish and the polish are visibly different: each link has been finished individually rather than the whole chain being polished at the end. And above 4 mm you feel it on the skin. Because every link is smoothed like a ring, a handmade chain moves against the neck or wrist without catching. A machine chain, polished as a whole after assembly, keeps the roughness of mechanical finishing on the edges of every link — and the wider the chain, the more clearly that discomfort comes through.
Choosing a width
The wider the chain, the more the handwork matters. As a guide, our Standard Cuban necklace in PT950 at 52 cm weighs approx. 54 g at 5 mm, approx. 78 g at 6 mm, approx. 105 g at 7 mm and approx. 218 g at 10 mm. Weights are approximate; as each piece is individually handcrafted, the finished weight may vary slightly.
If you are comparing chains, ask one question: is it solid PT950, and above 4 mm, is it handmade? If the answer to the second is anything other than yes, it is worth asking how it was made.
